About Us
STEPHEN A. RITCHIE
Stephen Ritchie has been practicing law in Ottawa for over 35 years. Over the years he has specialized in the areas of Real Estate, Corporate Law, Wills, Estates and Trusts. He thoroughly enjoys assisting ordinary people with their estate planning so that their beneficiaries get the most out of the gifts they are left. “I went into this business to help ordinary people”.
Stephen Ritchie’s extensive experience allows him to assist you with a broad range of transactions, and being a small firm affords our office the ability to take personalized care of each of our clients, from our first contact with you to the closing of your file. Unlike some firms, we take on only as much work as will still allow us to pay careful attention to each client’s file. We also work closely with other lawyers and accountants who assist us, when necessary, by consulting on files, providing support, or providing services we do not offer but that may be related to your file.
CARMEN M. BARU (version française en bas)
Carmen has joined Stephen after practising for five years with a litigation firm in Ottawa. She has a bilingual practice, in English and French. Always sensitive to her client's goals, Carmen searches for legal options with creativity and perseverance. An innovation enthusiast, she embraces technology in her practice.
Carmen has a combined B.C.L./JD degree from McGill University. During her Law studies, she received the J.S.D. Tory Writing Award for an essay on the status of economic rights under the Canadian Charter. She volunteered for the McGill Student Advocacy program, and she received the Director’s Award for her work on two disputes, one concerning student elections and the other being an academic grievance. She was a bilingual editor for the McGill Law Journal.
Before Law, Carmen pursued Master’s and Ph.D. studies in comparative literature (French and German) at the University of Western Ontario, during which she was a recipient of the Governor General’s Gold Medal.
Carmen is actively involved in the community. She was a member of the County of Carleton Law Association Technology Committee, and she volunteers regularly with the Pro Bono Legal Help Ontario clinic at the Ottawa courthouse. She makes community presentations in estate planning, and presents in entrepreneurial workshops. She sits on the board of directors of Parrot Partners Canada, a charity dedicated to the ethical rehabilitation of parrots.
In her spare time, Carmen takes whistling lessons from her parrots, as she tries to instill in them an appreciation for standards of reasonable conduct.
